United States Coast Guard Motor Life Boat 36460
In the Summer of 2014 I came on board to assist George Powell of Planksters in finishing the restoration of this historic 36’ USCG vessel. Built in 1941 in Curtis Bay, Maryland she served in Quoddy Head, Maine and later Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Built to be tough as nails, She is self-righting with three separate water tight cabins (including a survivors cabin) and numerous watertight compartments under the deck. She is cypress planking on oak frames with a bronze keel.
Part way through restoration the owner loaned her to Disney to be used in their film, “The Finest Hours.” Once returned we had to remove the “movie magic” and continue restoration to bring her back to original specifications. Work completed included: sistered frame heads, new sheer plank, covering boards and toe rail, numerous bottom planks replaced, decking repaired, re-canvased cabin tops, and a new rub rail among much more. She currently is on long term loan by the owner to the Michigan Maritime Museum where museum goers can charter her for a ride.
