USCG 26’ Type H Lifesaving Surfboat

This Type H Surfboat was built circa 1917 in the Coast Guard’s Curtis Bay Yard in Maryland and was stationed at Whitefish Point in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Type H was another tough Surfboat with multiple buoyancy chambers, self bailing deck by means of freeing trunks and water ballast tanks for stability while sailing. She was brought to George Powell and I for restoration by the Keewenaw County Historical Society. Work performed included installing sister frames, installing the watertight deck and buoyancy chambers, new keel shoe and many other smaller details.
